Producing the Plots: What it Takes to Attend the Largest Outdoor Farm Expo in Western Canada
Each July, growers, industry leaders and ag experts from across Canada gather in Langham, Saskatchewan for Ag in Motion (AIM) – the largest outdoor farm expo in Western Canada.
More than 30,000 attendees come to the event to participate in educational events, networking opportunities, and live field demonstrations, which is where our Nutrien Ag Solutions team shines.
Crop plots are integral to the AIM experience. These plots showcase a variety of crops grown under different conditions and using various management practices. All of the planning, preparation and tending of these plots results in a unique opportunity for growers and agronomists to see firsthand how different hybrids and varieties perform in the field and learn about the latest trends and practices in crop management.
Attendees can explore the plots and talk to experts about topics such as crop rotations, fertilization, weed control, and disease management.
This year, the Nutrien Ag Solutions team showcased 66 different varieties, which included canola, corn, soybeans, cereals, flax, and forages from Proven Seed, our proprietary Canadian seed brand.
Proven Seed’s Senior Director of Breeding Innovation, Bruce Harrison, leads the team responsible for the plots that attendees see at Ag in Motion.
“The team plants just like a farmer would and comes back on a regular basis to make sure that they're properly taken care of from a weed management perspective in terms of disease management and spraying fungicides - just like a farmer would,” says Bruce. “And what we're really trying to do is make sure that the genetics are properly represented so that we can share with our customers how they'll perform not only in the field here, but how they'll perform on their own farms.”
It takes a lot to get the plots ready for the event including proper order for seeding and planning the placement of the trials. Once planning is complete, the teams get out to the field to get the seed in the ground, and handle many of the challenges farmers do including combatting weeds and adjusting for weather challenges.

“Through the efforts of our team, it always turns out fantastic. We've got great material for people to see what our product portfolio can do,” says Scott Anderson, Manager of Field Research with Nutrient Ag Solutions.
Scott continues, “Ag in Motion is a great opportunity for us to showcase all the products that Proven seed has to offer. We have forage crops that we grow for animal feed and fodder as well canola from our breeding program. But we also have corn, soybeans, hard red spring wheat, CPS wheat, feed barley, flax, etc. It's quite a broad portfolio, so it's really exciting to be able to show the growers across Western Canada what Proven seed can bring them.”
At the end of the day, it’s all about the grower and how Nutrien Ag Solutions can help increase their yield and make a meaningful difference in their operation.
“When I talk to farmers, what we talk about is what's going right at the farm, but also what the challenges are, because I think without understanding that, we can't really look ahead and think about how we can solve those problems for our farmer customers and what products and solutions we might create for them,” says Bruce.
