Innovation and Advances with Proven Seed

Posted May 28th, 2024 | By Ryan McCann, Director, North America Seed Product Management

Ryan McCann, our Director, North America Seed Product Management shares his insights on seed, seed breeding innovations, and the outlook for 2025.

Agriculture and the challenges farmers face continue to evolve. At Proven Seed, we work hard to anticipate situations that our customers will encounter as we strive to feed a growing world, together. Our breeding technology has been part of many advances over the past years in Proven Seed. Most recently, we are part of developing new genetic protection to the disease clubroot in canola and advanced straight cut varieties with our new NTact® technology. Our goal is to leverage the advances in breeding technology to improve the offerings to our growers and help them achieve their goals as well.

Additionally, we are always working on new seed breeding innovations. We launched our proprietary shatter resistant canola with NTact® technology and will continue to look for advancements like these that bring cost and time efficiencies to our customers. This technology is available to our Proven Seed customers in 2024 in limited quantities, and we will be increasing production and volume for future years, as well as developing more hybrids with NTact technology as an integral characteristic. Our program is known for bringing great canola hybrids to our Nutrien customers.

As we look ahead, the recent moisture in western Canada has been very welcoming for most growers. Therefore, we are hoping that we will have a great start to the year in terms of crop establishment. Obviously, growers will and should be watching for insects such as flea beetles and then disease throughout the season. Observations during the growing season will help them decide on what seed treatments and disease resistant varieties they should be looking to grow in 2025, and we’ll be here to help.
